Management meets Nietzsche

A Leadership Philosophy

The Book

In this thought-provoking book, the author examines the fascinating story of how one of the greatest philosophers of all time, Nietzsche, brought down a value system in 1884, and what we can learn from it to live up to the buzzword "disruptive". Through the eyes of Nietzsche's Zarathustra, a prominent figure in philosophical scholarship, readers are taken on a journey to discover how the requirements for a great leader have changed over the last 140 years. Drawing on scientific studies, personal experiences, and other management literature, the book offers practical insights on how anyone can become a great leader, regardless of their background, gender, or other characteristics, if they have a philosophy of work.

With a mix of long-forgotten virtues, disruptive approaches, and a glimpse into the future of work, this book challenges traditional management concepts and offers a fresh perspective on what it means to be a great leader. The author cleverly translates Nietzsche's speeches into today's world of management culture, highlighting the significant influence that his teachings have on much of the literature today.

Part 1 and 2 of Nietzsche's masterpiece are covered in this book, taking readers on a rocky road to understanding what it takes to become a truly great leader. With entertaining and at times shocking examples drawn from the author's career, this book is a must-read for anyone who wants to embrace disruptive thinking and leadership in the modern age.

Inspiration

One day I was having dinner with three of my managers and we were talking about the different leadership styles that people have. At that dinner, I received feedback that they were very happy with the company culture we had built and that my (slightly) different leadership style was very important to that.

They asked me who or what influenced me the most in developing this leadership style, but at that moment I was not able to answer the question correctly. I mean, there was so much.... Books I've read, conversations and situations (good and also bad) I've experienced, feedback I've received and given, and even movies I've seen. But the more I thought about it, the more I realised that the main pillars that drive me in the work are influenced by one particular book. Nietzsche's book "Thus spoke Zarathustra" (or more specifically, my interpretation of it) was one of the most influential book regarding my leadership style.

I decided to bring my thoughts into order and summarise them in a book.

Review

Steffen Reckert, has taken a deep philosophical dive into business leadership with his book, “Management meets Nietzsche.” After careful reading of Nietzsche’s “Thus Spake Zarathustra '', Steffen noticed striking parallels to his own work philosophy, developed over years of experience. He uses these insights to describe the stages of development that all great leaders must pass through, and writes with a contagious intensity. Linking the business world to the well-known 19th century philosopher’s takes on one of humanity's oldest religions, teaches us about all three spheres and makes the book unique and fascinating. Steffen’s carefully researched recommendations are more of a road-map than a quick recipe for success, and this is as it should be. Success does not come cheaply, but this book will tell you how to get there.
